Head of Marketing (Product Marketing background) - Small Team - Self-funded - 100% remote

Remote

Work for a tech company that’s ambitious, calm, and “gets marketing”.

We’re seeking a Head of Marketing for our remote-first | profitable | self-funded | martech | SaaS. (Yeah, it’s a mouthful but if you’re the right candidate every one of those words means something to you)

  • Are you always the smartest marketer in the room and crave collaboration over egos?
  • Do you want to lead a marketing function and be in the room where it happens?
  • Are you sick of "back to office/hybrid work" or want to just find a safe place with an infinite runway without the fear of a layoff?
  • Do you hate the BS that comes with most leadership roles like exec/VC theatre where you spend more time trying to market your idea then actually marketing to customers?
  • Do you really love the craft of actual hands-on marketing work?

If you’re saying “heck yeah” (out loud or to yourself) then this is the place for you.

(if you’re wondering who I writing this.. Hi, I’m Josh the Founder CEO. I'm 100% committed to finding the right person)

🤔Sounds great, but what is Referral Rock?

Referral Rock is a B2B SaaS company that provides referral software to help businesses acquire new customers through word-of-mouth marketing (refer-a-friend, affiliate, partner marketing)

We believe:

  • Every business can benefit from a strong referral program, and we're on a mission to help companies maximize their potential through our comprehensive platform
  • Great individual contributors (that come together with others to collaborate on strategy) with systems and processes built around them are key to a business like ours. We’re more interested in doing great work together vs building a 100+ person company
  • We care deeply about metrics, product event data, and automation to give our team superpowers (data and feedback driven)
  • Done is better than perfect + everything and everyone is a work in progress

Our 20-person team is 100% remote, ambitious, calm + never had a layoff. We work in EST hours but are flexible with at least 70% working hour cross-over.

Please see our careers page for more about us.

🚂 So what am I getting myself into?

This is a unique opportunity for the right marketer.

We have a great company but are missing a marketing leader. You’d be our first Head of Marketing and would own our marketing function reporting directly to the founder CEO.

So far we’ve had great ICs in content marketing + a founder with a decent knack for marketing to get us this far.

We understand that distribution is what makes a business a real business and marketing is one of the most powerful levers.

You won’t be starting from a blank canvas or a random set of marketing assets left behind. We’re 7 years into our journey and already have strong distribution, exceptional marketing ops, and a website that converts. You get to come in for the fun stuff, bring in your expertise, and look like the hero.

We need product marketing leadership. Someone who will make Referral Rock the clear obvious choice for every right-fit business.

Great assets you’d inherit:

  • A consistent effective GTM motion of Inbound SEO → Inside Sales → Trial → Onboarding → Successful Customers
  • A library of content on referral marketing + other related topics with a high DR domain that is often cited for its authority in referral marketing (that brings in consistent leads)
  • A robust product that is only getting stronger with clearer competitive advantages and rapidly improving UI/UX
  • A clean, trustworthy, and accurate operations stack packed with insights ready to be drawn from (HubSpot CRM, GA4, June, Vitally, Intercom)
  • A long-tenured senior team of collaborators (Product, Sales, Customer Services) that work effectively together (all key knowledge is still here)
  • A large horizontal market that largely serves SMBs for strong brands who are tech-enabled but not necessarily tech-savvy

You are the final piece of the puzzle.

🎯 You're a great fit if:

  • You're a seasoned B2B SaaS marketer with a deep love of martech products and system integrations (bonus if you’ve marketed a horizontal product before)
  • You see the world in systems and frameworks that work together like a machine (both on the people/process and with content/messaging that works together in concert)
  • You have a breath of marketing experience across multiple channels (not necessarily depth) and could talk to just about any marketer in the world
  • You have a strong curiosity to learn more about other marketing disciplines outside of product marketing and growth marketing
  • You still love the execution side of marketing but can also delegate
  • You bet on yourself and win
  • You know that great marketing often repeats itself or has to say the same things in different ways to get through to the audience

🏗️ What you'll build:

First, you’d continue what we’ve started in 2023: Updating our marketing building blocks

We’ve gone through an extensive positioning exercise (internally run April Dunford style + our own research) but it’s early in reaching other business areas. We’re testing messaging but have already baked the findings into the ongoing product strategy.

Here’s some of our priorities for the rest of 2023:

  • Finalize and validate messaging
  • Develop a strategic narrative
  • Implement a launch motion around major product updates with education to get engagement with customer and team members.
  • Work with our content team to aligns with the messaging and narrative:
  • Development of leadership content in our space backed by our experiences + product data
  • Adding our unique point of view that will really resonate backed by our data (adding that to our SEO superpowers would be a wicked combination)
  • Connect our mini-brand in the marketing community through partnerships (webinars, content, events) to improve our existing marketing flywheel

We believe our audience reach and unique point of view can be a win-win for co-marketing and customers (we have many relationships but have not previously had the right resources and messaging to take advantage).

If this plan sounds like crap, we’d love to debate it with you.

There is much more to untap. The right marketing leader will be able to take over from the current 2023 plan and take the business to higher heights on their own as we:

  • Expand into new markets
  • Launch innovative features & integrations
  • Ride the trend of “efficiency” in marketing
  • We are coming into our own with Act 2 to become a brand, level up the product, tune our PLG engine, and own our market

🌱How we work and where we're "growing" together:

(Dad jokes may be part of our culture, sorry not sorry)

We think of projects in series with strong prioritization vs 50 overwhelming parallel initiatives.

You won't have to "do it all yourself". We want to build around you, you’re the hero but you get resources. You'll get help from a collaborative leadership team. We lean on many sources of learning (podcasts, newsletters, cohort-based courses) then bring it all into the fold of our own business context.

We encourage creativity and experimentation along with consistent execution of what works for us. Maybe it’s the creator economy, the fall of social media, being a media company, B2C/DTC marketing trends for B2B… What trends are on the rise and how can that work for Referral Rock?

The world of marketing is always changing. Those who are willing to adjust, measure results, and use feedback loops will stay relevant.

That’s who we are and that’s the type of product and company we’re building.

➡️

They say, great copywriting attracts the best customers and may even turn away the bad fits so read these statements with caution.

This is a very “meta” job where it’s marketing for a marketing product (hope you never get tired of talking about marketing and tech)

The term “many hats” sounds fun, not stressful. As long as you’re only wearing so many at a time

There may be enough of something here to reinvent a category and make a big splash (everyone knows word-of-mouth and referral programs, but many don’t really understand it)

You'll work with a founder that has a vision and an opinion but wants to collaborate with a much more experienced marketer who gets it

We have tons of data on our customers, sales call recordings, onboarding call recordings, demographics, firmographics, and product usage from 5+ years of successful and unsuccessful customers

You will own everything marketing and inherit the content marketing team (later once you’re ready) but you’re here and excited to build the marketing side of the business not just hire and manage people

You love the details.. you like to "nail" but can use help scaling. You actually love the marketing "work", hate the politics, hate the short term thinking, hate the theatre for VCs and execs but also get things have to get shipped and make an impact.

You’re expected to push back and ask for clarity. You’ll ask for resources. You’ll be intrinsically focused on your numbers but have the patience to take a long term view on bets.

If these statements excite you, you’re probably a good fit and should mention minecraft in your application. Otherwise if the statements spooked you, then you may have already stopped reading 🤷

🏆 In 12 months we’ll look back and say:

Our conversion rates have doubled since all the positioning and messaging has fully rolled out. I knew we could improve, but I didn’t know doubling organic MQLs was possible. I’m excited to see what you can do with $10k a month in ad spend.
Josh (CEO) —The PLG engine is really kicking now, we had great traffic before but now so much of it is converting directly into the product’s referral program templates I’ve designed. The businesses that come through those channels all have better KPIs. Essentially they start faster, stay longer, and expand quicker. When product aligns with marketing, magic happens!
You (Head of Marketing) —With you owning marketing, I finally have relief. This was the last “hat” for me to hand-off and now I can be out of the marketing details. It’s amazing to have a marketer on the team who can propose plans, execute them. then we see the actual outcomes.
Josh (CEO) —I also love the brand lift we are getting. I know it’s hard to measure, but the types of leads that are coming in through your co-marketing efforts really get it. It’s great to see the webinars with integration partners has led to a 30% increase in pipeline in the past 3 months. You’re making everyone’s job easier.
Josh (CEO) —I’ve never worked in a culture like this. There is no BS. I feel trusted and valued for my opinion. I can live in my zone of genius all day and finally feel like I have a real seat at the table. I know we’re just getting started here and we’re all going to benefit.
— You (Head of Marketing) —

🤝 Interview process

  1. Complete the application
  2. Meet the founder: Our founder will schedule an introductory Zoom call.
  3. Working session: Depending on the role, we'll schedule a short working session over Zoom (max 1 hour)
  4. Independent work product (paid): Take the next natural steps of what we decided on in the workshop session and refine it on your own.
  5. Review call: A call to review the work together
  6. Meet other team members: A chance to meet 2-3 other people you'd work directly with
  7. Final call: Finalize any details on both sides

All calls unless specified will be with the founder over zoom with video. Who you work with is important, so working with Josh during the interview process will be very much like day to day work at Referral Rock. If you’re curious about Josh he’s active on social, has many podcast interviews out there, and writes a newsletter. (yes I’m uncomfortable talking writing about myself in the third-person)

Our goal is to make you a formal job offer or "not a good fit" decision very quickly so you're not left waiting on us.
